Fair Use Policy

Effective October 28, 2026 · Version 2026-10-28

Unlimited calling and texting comes with our paid plans. During your 14-day free trial, a few safety limits apply, which we show in the app and on our pricing page. This policy explains how unlimited works on paid plans.

This policy is part of Common Number's Terms of Service at /terms.

Room to run your business

Unlimited US and Canada calling and texting is for normal business conversations. A busy business is welcome. High usage alone does not mean misuse.

We look at how you use texts, calling minutes and devices to decide whether usage is normal, fair and reasonable.

If usage isn't normal business use, we may limit outgoing calls and texts or apply the charges described in our notice, subject to the promises below. Fair-use action never closes your account, releases your numbers, or stops incoming calls and texts.

Our two promises

First, we give you written notice at least 14 days before any fair-use charge or outgoing limit. We explain the unusual usage and give you time to change it. Before any charge, the notice states the rates, billable units, usage boundary above which charges apply, and start date. We never charge retroactively. Only usage above that boundary after the start date can be charged.

Second, we never stop incoming calls or texts for fair use.

A separate safeguard for fraud

If we see signs of fraud or an account compromise, we may pause outgoing calls immediately to protect your account. We tell you right away why we paused them. On paid plans, your workspace owner will be able to resume outgoing calls after a fresh security check. This fraud safeguard is separate from fair use, so the 14-day fair-use notice does not apply to it.

Messaging we do not allow

Follow the Acceptable use section of our Terms, including Twilio's Acceptable Use Policy and Messaging Policy and the CTIA Messaging Principles and Best Practices. Do not use the Service for unsolicited bulk messaging. Texting customers who opted in, such as appointment reminders and order updates, is normal business use. You must not:

  • text anyone who has not agreed to receive your texts, or keep texting someone who replied STOP;
  • send marketing texts without the person's separate written consent;
  • send content about high-risk lending, debt collection, gambling, prescription or illegal drugs, cannabis, firearms, adult content, or third-party lead generation;
  • send content about alcohol, tobacco or vaping products, CBD, kratom, drug paraphernalia, fireworks or explosives;
  • promote investment or trading schemes, get-rich-quick or pyramid schemes, or deceptive work-from-home offers;
  • offer debt forgiveness, debt consolidation, debt reduction or credit repair;
  • send spam, phishing, fraud, harassment or anything illegal;
  • hide or fake who you are, or use a number to impersonate someone else;
  • try to get around carrier filters, registration rules or limits we or our providers set.

Calling we do not allow

You must not use the Service to:

  • run auto-dialers, calling bots or prerecorded calling campaigns;
  • generate calls to inflate traffic or collect connection fees (traffic pumping);
  • make excessive short calls;
  • dial numbers in sequence or work through large lists of numbers;
  • call people without their consent, people on Do Not Call lists, or anyone who has asked you to stop calling;
  • fake caller ID or disguise who is calling (spoofing).
